Opening Keynote
Real Heroes Don't Wear Spandex: How to Positively Impact the Lives of Others Without a Costume
Charles Marshall
In this thoroughly inspiring and uplifting program, Charles discusses what it takes to become a hero and make an impact in your school community. Attendees will learn there are four characteristics every hero possesses, and it is up to every individual to harness, develop, and apply these traits. Participants of the Real Heroes Don’t Wear Spandex presentation will learn that what they do matters, especially when they show up with a heroic attitude.

Mass Casualty Incidents and the School Nurse Emergency Response
Lindsay Turner, BSN, RN & Norrie Bradley, BSN, RN
This session will focus on the American College of Surgeons Stop the Bleed Training.  CoxHealth Nurse Educators Lindsay Turner and Norrie Bradley will guide learners through the necessary steps to recognize life-threatening bleeds and life-saving interventions. Learners will not only be presented with this information, but will also have the opportunity to visit stations and practice the skills no school nurse should be without. Whether you have participated in a Stop the Bleed course before or this is your first time, you will leave this presentation with life-saving skills and confidence.

School Nurse Resource Track
Participants will discover resources for themselves to assist with direct care, health promotion, and education in the school setting and health office.  Some resources will be specific to Missouri.

Health Condition Management Tack
Learn how to provide direct care for students with chronic health conditions.  The presentations will address direct care, case management, and address barriers to learning. 

Cultivating Partnerships Track
These session will assist participants in collaborating with multidisciplinary partners to improve student outcomes, enhance school health programs, and increase efficiency and effectiveness. 

Simulation Lab Track
You asked for it and we delivered!  These simulation labs will enhance  your preparedness for emergencies, increase confidence and competence, and allows us to practice teamwork, communication and coordination during emergencies.

School Nurse Leadership Workshop Track
This workshop track is perfect for any school nurse interested in updating or creating a health service policy and procedure manual.

Infectious Disease - Prevention and Control - A Toolkit for Missouri Schools

This session will provide learners with an overview of the development of MO KIDS IPC Toolkit, what is included in the Toolkit, and how it can be used to strengthen their infection prevention and control programs using whole school community education and empowerment. The Toolkit is on online resource that was released to Missouri K-12 school on January 2, 2025 and will be available to Missouri schools through May 2030 free of charge.

Pediatric GI Pearls for Primary Care
Jody Hefner, MD
Join us for an overview of the most common pediatric/adolescent gastrointestinal conditions and management. Dr. Hefner will review pathophysiology, treatment, and the warning signs school nurses need to be aware of when assessing and referring students. This presentation will highlight constipation and gastrostomy tubes, specifically types of tubes, management, and troubleshooting. Bring your cases and questions to this presentation relevant to every-day school nursing.

English learners come to school with rich knowledge of language, culture, history and life experience. But they don't speak English yet! So how can we get to know them and assist them appropriately? In this session we will discuss how culture impacts one’s view of health care and examine the unique health and social/emotional presented by English learners and their families. We will also explore resources available to improve communication with families to promote increased health and wellness.

NEW Food Allergy Management in Schools: Expert Recommendations 2024

Approximately 8 in 10 food allergy reactions in schools happen in the classroom. 1 in 4 life-threatening food allergy reactions in the school setting, happen in people without diagnosed food allergies (including faculty and staff). This session will highlight the newly published 2024 Expert Recommendations for Food Allergy Management in Schools. Best practices for managing food allergies in the classroom, dining, and other school-related activities will be discussed and the importance of collaboration between EVERYONE involved with the student (student, caregiver, school nurse, registered dietician, staff, administrators, HCPs, etc.) In addition, resources will be presented to assess gaps in your school’s current policy and protocols aa well as quality improvement resources. Participants will also be given a QR code so they may follow along during the presentation.

School Nurses Supporting Students in Crisis

The Missouri Department of Mental Health, Division of Behavioral Health (DBH) manages programs and services focused on behavioral health challenges. DBH partners closely with the Missouri Behavioral Health Council (MBHC), who represents over 30 behavioral health providers across the state. DBH and MBHC support programs and services for youth and their families that focus on prevention, education, resiliency skills, and treatment. Services are provided by local Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics and Adolescent SUD providers – all contracted with DBH to provide services that meet state and federal standards. This presentation will provide a high-level overview of the youth continuum of care within DBH, with emphasis on prevention efforts, the crisis continuum, and referral avenues into the system. The purpose of this presentation is to connect school professionals with resources to rely on when youth they interact with need additional support or are in crisis.

This interactive workshop will explore the vital connection between mental health and pain, particularly in students from diverse backgrounds living with migraine and other chronic pain conditions. Special emphasis will be placed on addressing the disparities BIPOC and rural students face, as they are often underdiagnosed or undertreated when it comes to pain. Participants will
gain tools to foster equitable access to care and accommodations, supporting all students in thriving both academically and emotionally. Participants will leave with evidence-based strategies and practical resources to support their daily practice, ensuring equitable care for all students, particularly those facing chronic pain.

In the last 25 years, the concept of Healthy Schools has emerged as another avenue for “health care”, particularly in sensitive population like children and young adults. Nurses should have awareness regarding common environmental issues and knowledge of simple, evidence-based, best practices that can be used to create and maintain healthy learning environments for both students and staff. Professional School Nursing: Supporting Teaching & Learning from the Trenches

Join us as we welcome NASN President-Elect, Lynn Nelson! Lynn joins us from Tumwater, Washington, where she serves as the Senior Director of Health Services and Integrated Student Supports at Capital Area Educational Service District #113. Celebrate with us Lynn's more than 3 decades of practice, which is founded in the belief that providing quality service for children and families must include an intentional focus on equity in both the health and education arenas.  Examine the role of school nurse as one that reaches beyond the health clinic, supporting students, teachers & education. Lynn will explore these concepts with us as well as introduce the NASN School Nursing Practice Framework, preparing us to Support Students to be Healthy, Safe, and Ready to Learn.
